As the name suggests, state universitys are established,operated and funded by the state government. State universitys are usually established by a local legislatie assembly act. According to a UGC (University Grants Commission) consolidated list, there are 359 state universitys in the country. State Universitys can confer / grant their own degrees to the students.
“Deemed” is a status of autonomy granted to a university by DHE (Directorate of higher educatin) under MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development), on the advice of UGC. Deemed-to-be Universitys enjoy full autonomy or independence in deciding courses, syllabus, admissions and fees. Some Deemed-to- be Universitys can also grant degrees on their own. Deemed-to-be Universitis, which contiue to perform well, can get the status of a full-fldged University.
Private universitys are also UGC approved instiutes. However, such universitys do not operate on central or state funds. Unlike state and central universitys which have a ‘Chancellor’ as the head, a private university is always headed by ‘President’ or ‘Chairperson’.
